Harrison Oakes

Harrison Oakes, PhD is a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow in the Social Research Institute and Thomas Coram Research Unit at University College London. His research focuses on how social environments that stigmatize concealable identities (e.g., homophobic environments) create climates of suspicion in which claims to contrasting non-stigmatized identities are met with disbelief (e.g., doubting someone’s claim to be straight). He also studies sexual minority men’s use of mobile dating apps like Grindr and Tinder. Specifically, he adopts an intraminority stress lens to examine the impact of self-perceived desirability (i.e., status) on these men’s interactions and experiences within the apps and the subsequent impacts on their mental health and wellbeing.
