Postgraduate Courses

The research interests of the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies at UCL are many and varied. Teachers are willing to supervise suitably qualified research students registered for MPhil and PhD degrees in all of the following fields:

The Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies contributes to the following one-year (or two-year, part-time taught MA degree programme that begins in September and ends the following September:

MA in Hispanic Studies

A student with a good BA degree in Hispanic Studies (or equivalent) will follow four areas of study:

1. A core course in Critical Approaches, to be examined by two essays of 3,000 to 4,000 words each to be submitted on the 1st May and the 1st July, one of which must be in English. This core course is taught intercollegiately in the evenings.

2&3. Two special subjects, to be examined as for the core course. The following specifically MA courses are normally available:

as well as a selection from the UCL and Birkbeck undergraduate courses on offer. A reading course proposed by the student, subject to the department's approval may, substitute one Special Subject.

4. A dissertation of 10,000-20,000 words, to be written in English or Spanish, and submitted at the end of the programme (1st September) on a literary topic agreed with the Departmental Graduate Adviser.
