Dec graduated with a Biological and Medicinal Chemistry degree from the University of Exeter in 2017. Following this, he completed an MRes in Drug Discovery at Imperial College London where he worked in Professor Ed Tate’s laboratory, looking into the mechanism of action of a novel antibiotic potentiator. He moved to UCL for his PhD (Tabor lab, Chemsitry) to study synthetic multicyclic peptides - how to selectively control disulfide bond formation, and how to identify where these disulfide bonds are.
In Dec’s postdoctoral work in the Thalassinos lab, he is using ion mobility–mass spectrometry to characterise both the higher-order structures of proteins, and their protein-protein interactions. Being a metrology project, protocols to ensure traceability and estimation of the measurement uncertainties of the results will be developed.
Outside of the lab, you’ll find Dec lounging poolside at a lido or cycling to a cosy pub.
