My research centres around the development of electronic structure techniques and their application to semiconductor surfaces and nano-structures on those surfaces. This defines the areas that someone supervised by me would work in.

I have various areas where someone interested in doing a PhD could work; the project would be tailored to the individual, but some ideas might be:

  • Electronic and atomic structure of nanostructure on semiconductor surfaces (e.g. dangling bond wires on silicon or bismuth nanolines)
  • Semiconductor growth mechanisms, particularly with strain in the system (e.g. Ge on Si or InAs on GaAs)
  • Development of computer codes for simulating large systems on massively parallel computers (the Conquest code)
  • Understanding conduction in one-dimensional structures on the atomic scale

Much of my research is done in close collaboration with experimentalists (which I think is vital for successful work in this area). I have strong links with the National Institute for Materials Science in Tsukuba, Japan, both with theory groups and experimental groups. If you were interested, there would be chance for visits to Japan for research and collaboration.

You can find out more about the research I do here. Please email me if you're interested in more information about a PhD.
