- Case study 1: Tropical cyclones in the North-West
Pacific.
-
This first case study illustrates the application of GLMs to a very
small dataset. The aim here is to use the values of the Niño 3
index to forecast annual tropical cyclone numbers in the North-West
Pacific. The dataset consists contains annual cyclone numbers from 1959
to 2000, with associated Niño 3 values.
The data for this case study, and a sample program to analyse them,
are available to download. Further details
on this study, as well as the data and program (written in the
R
language), may be found here.
- Case study 2: Daily rainfall in Western
Ireland.
-
The second case study deals with daily rainfall modelling, over an area
of some 40×50km² in the West of Ireland. This work was
motivated by a number of extreme flood events in the 1990s. It
illustrates how GLMs may be used to identify systematic changes in the
climate of an area. It also shows how changes in extreme event
frequencies can be assessed by simulating a GLM.

here.
- Case study 3: Monthly temperatures in the United
States.
-
This study illustrates the application of GLMs at a continental
scale. It is intended to demonstrate the feasibility of the GLM
approach for large datasets. The dataset here consists of around
1,500,000 observations of monthly temperature, obtained from 2,600
weather stations across the USA.
Further details of this study may be found
here.
- Case study 4: Daily Maximum Windspeed in the
Netherlands.
-
The final study relates to daily windspeed measurements. High-quality
observational data are provided, from 9 weather stations in the
Netherlands. The dataset is of moderate size and contains some
interesting structure. It offers an opportunity for researchers to
familiarise themselves with some specialist GLM fitting
software. The dataset, together with the definition files required by
the software, are available to download.
Further details of this study, including the
dataset and model definition files, may be found here.
For case studies 1 and 4, data are provided in order that attendees can
experiment with GLM techniques. The necessary software packages are
freely available, from sites listed on the
