Wednesday, 5 July, 2006 Session: Archaeobotany and political economy--
Analysis of archaeobotnaical remains from Garamantian settlement in the Fezzan, Southern Libya, indicates that the crop repertoire includes species of Mediterranean/Near Eastern and Sub-Saharan Africa. This paper presents attempts to trace the evolution of the crop and weed flora through time and space using data from sites across Northern Africa. As an aid to analysis an archaeobotanical database has been compiled for published and unpublished data from the region which it is hoped will eventually be made available for wider use. The data base will be introduced and results of multivariate analysis of the crop and weed data will be presented as an example of its use. ... return to 5 July schedule |
