Application Guidance

While putting your application together, please keep the following tips in mind:

  • Organising ECRM is an opportunity to learn and develop your skills, so it is not necessary to have previous organising experience (after all, we didn’t have any).
  • ECRM is meant to have a fun, friendly and collaborative atmosphere, so this should be taken into account when inviting keynote and plenary speakers. Also, any career talks/workshops should always be primarily for the benefit of participants, rather than for the company.
  • ECRM is usually an opportunity for participants to learn about non-academic careers as well as academic ones, so there are normally workshops and sometimes exhibition stands, as well as maths talks.
  • ECRM is typically a three-to-four day conference, and is usually held around summer.
  • Total participant numbers (including organisers and speakers) in recent years have ranged from around 65-100 people.
  • Organisers must make every effort to accept talks/participants.
  • There is a lot of information available on the internet about past ECRMs, i.e. YRMs (e.g. https://sites.google.com/view/yrm-2021/, https://yrm2018.wordpress.com/, https://yrm2016.wordpress.com/, ), including schedules etc, which should help as some guidance.
  • Remember to have fun, and that as organisers of ECRM, you can be surprisingly creative with your vision of the next conference! After hearing back from us, if you will be hosting ECRM 2023, we will be able to pass on many of our tips and resources that we used for ECRM 2022.

To apply for ECRM 2023, please send the following information to maths.ecrm2022@ucl.ac.uk by 11:59pm Saturday 18 June 2022. Also feel free to email us for any informal queries.

  • Name of Institution
  • Permission given by department? (e.g. Head of Department)
  • Name, email and status (e.g. PhD Year 2) of potential organisers/helpers (The main organisers should be current UK PhD students, although advice and help can come from a number of sources. Don’t worry, we know that this list of organisers can change - especially when new PhDs arrive - but, all organisers must have permission from their supervisor(s) before taking part)
  • What you like most about ECRM
  • Motivation - why you/your institution should hold ECRM (please also consider accessibility by public transport for participants from across the country - hopefully ECRM 2023 and the following ECRMs will be continue to be in-person events!)
  • Any preliminary plans/visions for ECRM 2023? (including: dates, conference location/rooms and capacities, accommodation availability for chosen dates etc. This question is of particular importance as you will need to be provisionally booking these resources soon!)
We will reply to confirm we have received your application, so let us know if you don’t hear from us within a week of submitting. We will make a decision as soon as possible and get back to everyone... Good luck!
