I would base my conclusions on Umberto Eco's afterward in The Future of the Book, "that Books will remain indispensible not only for literature, but for any circumstance in which one needs to read carefully, not only to receive information but also to speculate and to reflect about it". Moreover, the long term effects of reading from a screen are yet to be conclusive. It has also yet to be seen the long term viability of digital formats as we know them. Perhaps there may be a more palatable format that may succeed in replacing the paper publications of today, but the prospect of a paperless of office is still more likely than a truly global information environment replacing contemporary books.
