The paperless environment
The landscape for this is the development of various technologies that have evolved throughout time in order to produce, store and transmit information that has culminated in the computer, the internet and the digital object. So the ‘paper trail’ leads us from clay and stone tablets, papyrus and parchment, to manuscripts and microfiches . Information has been impressed into many a form and so it is understandable why in this context people are wondering whether paper is to become obsolete like its predecessors. It is the fight between the bit and atom and the bit’s takeover bid has been described as ‘irrevocable and unstoppable’(Negroponte N. (1995) Being digital Vintage Books, New York p.4) .
