Is Paperlessness feasible and is it desirable?

Arguably every information environment, at least in industrialised nations, has become global in scope and function as a result of the internet. So websites and information about library services are available across time and space to an infinite audience. Whether these same information services can fully deliver electronically is another matter that I will discuss by way of my workplace, a microcosm of the information sector as a whole as it were. I wish to say there should be a measured but generally optimistic response to the growth in technology that has made paperlessness a possibility but would like to steer away from both extremes of technology as panacea on one hand and the traditionalist clutching at straws (or books in this case) on the other. I see no end to the book as a portable mode of information transmission but there is an expanded role for electronic resources where there is obvious potential, the remote delivery of services for example.
