BUTC Selection

British University Team Championships (BUTC) will be held at Birmingham University on 25th March 2018. The format is Team Single Elimination, teams are made up of 3 recurve archers from the same university. Seeding is done using the Bray 1 round. Matches are played using the Beiter Hit-Miss system, cumulative sum of 4 ends of 6 at 6 cm discs. Sudden death are concluded in an end(s) of 3 at 6 cm discs.

We have proposed a BUTC selection criteria involving 3 stages, only 12 successful applicants can take part. At least 8 of the applications will be based on the BUCS Indoors criteria and a Bray 1 score, the remaining will be selected in a selection committee meeting based on current performance.

Please sign up using archr by the end of the Friday 2nd February session. All scores must be submitted by then.

We would like all 12 applicants to attend Stage 1 and Stage 2, which will be held on the BUTC Selection Weekend held on:

Stage 1 - 10th February

All 12 archers will score a Bray 1. The layout of the faces shall be 4 on a boss, shooting in 2 details is not necessary.

The 12 archers then shall play individual matches with each other in a Double Elimination format. The format of the matches shall be cumulative sum of 4 ends of 3 at 6 cm discs. Sudden death shall be concluded in an end(s) of 1 at 6 cm disc. The discs shall be laid out in a ‘Mickey Mouse’ format.

All hits and misses in match play shall be recorded, including byes.

Briefly, a double elimination format has two brackets. Everyone starts in the winner’s bracket, winners proceed through the winner’s bracket however losers will then move to the loser’s bracket and proceed in that bracket. Losers in the loser’s bracket are eliminated. At the end, the finalists of both the winner’s and loser’s bracket shall play each other. If the finalist of the winner’s bracket loses this match, the match is played again one last time.

Here is an example on the layout of the double elimation format.

Stage 2 - 10th and 11th February

Team matches are played throughout the session. All individual hits and misses in match play shall be recorded.

All 12 archers shall split into 4 teams of 3. 2 matches shall be played at the same time by these teams. The format of the matches shall be cumulative sum of 4 ends of 6 at 6 cm discs. Sudden death are concluded in an end(s) of 3 at 6 cm discs. The discs shall be laid out in a ‘6-on-a-die’ format.

After the matches, the coaches may change the teams to experiment.

Only 6 archers, based on the performance on that weekend, may proceed to Stage 3. They will be announced on the 18th February.

Stage 3 - 1st March Provisionally

Similar to Stage 2. Team matches are played throughout the session. 6 archers shall split into 2 teams and play matches against each other. The teams are selected by the coaches.

The Final BUTC team shall be announced on the 3rd March.
