Practical session 5 (morning)

Using Concordance

1. Accessing Concordance on the ECP computers

  • Use Programs on the Start button to find the program.
  • There are three text files (blake.txt, merchant.txt and emmafull.txt) in the shared folder - you can find this via Windows Explorer.
  • Copy these files into your own file area. This will ensure that any more files you make are stored within your own area.
  • All text files must be plain text files, not Word or other formats.

Note: emmafull.txt is very large. If you make a concordance of this text, please delete the concordance before you leave today.

2. Things to try

Use Make Full Concordance on the File menu then Add files to select the text files.

On blake.txt

  • Make a word list .
  • Look at some concordance entries for words with the highest frequency.
  • Add the percentages to the word frequencies.
  • Try looking at collocations of the most frequent word.

On merchant.txt

  • Make a concordance using the references.
  • Sort the contexts of a frequent word by reference category.
  • Try using the lemmatiser on merchant.txt
  • Make a web concordance from merchant.txt.

If you have time, find a text you are interested in on the Internet, save it to your own file area and make a concordance. To ensure that you have a plain text file for Concordance, you may find it easier to copy and paste from the Web page into Notepad or Wordpad before saving the text file.
