Jo MELVIN
My research project draws directly on Peter Townsend’s editorial papers
from Studio International magazine 1965-1975 which I organised, now housed
at the Tate. The diverse material contains many original art pieces, specially
designed covers as well as early examples of conceptual art extensive correspondence.
It stands unique as a document, crucial to the networks of new practices, whilst
maintaining a strong sense of its history as a radical magazine founded in
the 1890’s without recourse nostalgia. I co-organised the conference ‘Art
magazines as sites of process and exchange’ as part of the Avalanche
1970-76 exhibition at Chelseaspace in June, planning included a research visit
to New York to interview artists/writers involved with magazines from the period.
I teach history and theory at Chelsea College of art and design and at City & Islington
College.
