Synchronization Model of the Syllable

📄 Xu (2024)

The model

The syllable is a synchronization mechanism that aligns the consonantal, vocalic, and laryngeal gestures by their onset, so as to eliminate most of the temporal degrees of freedom to make human speech possible.

Synchronization model: activation of initial C, V, final C, tone and phonation register across two syllables, with co-onset at each syllable boundary
