Memory and History in Twentieth Century Italy (0.5 unit. 20 seminars. 2 hours)

1. Course outline and structure

This course aims to provide an extensive introduction to themes relating to the study of memory, memories and history with specific reference to Twentieth Century Italy. Drawing on the rich debates and tradition of historical and anthropological work which has seen the light of day in recent years, the course starts off with a study of methodologies before moving onto more specific case studies regarding various periods of Italian history and moments within that history which have provided particular sets of debates regarding memory, history and forgetting.

A reading pack will be compiled with the key texts needed for the course. In addition, we will be looking at a series of films, documentaries and archive footage, as well as listening to music and songs as part of the course material.

All students are expected to attend all classes and to give at least one presentation. You will not be allowed to submit an essay unless you have attended the correct number of classes.

2. Assessment

The course is examined by a long essay only (5-6,000 words). All students will be expected to provide me with a plan for the essay (and a title approved by me) by reading week of spring term at the latest. Individual meetings will be held about essays.

It is advisable that students structure their essays around their individual presentation (see also below).

3. Classes

The first four weeks will be spent looking at methodologies and issues regarding memory studies and research.

The remaining 16 weeks of the course will take this form. Each week an event will be studied. First, we will look at the event itself:

what happened? when? who was involved?

Then: we will look at the various ways in which that event has been remembered, or forgotten.

For example:

- memorials (plaques, statues, tombstones, murals)

- oral history and testimony

- books, films, photographs, paintings, museums

- tombs

- anniversaries and commemorations

A key issue will be that relating to conflicts over memories and over forgetting. So we will also look at the various agencies involved in the 'production of memory' and the debates over how to remember, or forget, various events. These agents include:

- The State

- 'unofficial' bodies

- oppositions parties and groupings

- victims and the families of victims

- 'famous' people and their relatives

- interviews and oral history testimonies

Each week ALL students will be expected to read up around the event itself. In addition, each week a presentation will look at some aspects of the memory production with regard to that event. Most weeks we will watch a film and/or listen to interviews and music etc.
