Travel information

UPDATE !!!

1. Planned engineering work for the Tube on Sunday 5 September
This should not affect people arriving at Heathrow or Gatwick as the Piccadilly, Victoria and Northern lines are not affected.
For other lines, visit Transport for London's weekend engineering works website.

2. Proposed tube strike for Monday 6 September and Tuesday 7 September
A 24 hour strike by RMT and TSSA union members is set to affect Tube services from early evening on Monday 6 September and throughout Tuesday 7 September. Disruption is likely on most journeys. People should be available at stations to help you with your travel. For the most recent information, see Transport for London's strike page.

General information

The main venue for the meeting is the Harrie Massey Lecture Theatre at 25 Gordon Street (ground floor, near the back entrance) in Bloomsbury. This building contains University College London's Department of Mathematics and Student Union. The lecture theatre is a 12-15 minute walk from the President Hotel (map) where most speakers are staying.

The best way to get around London is to use the Underground (London's subway system, affectionately known as the tube). The tube map is very useful. There are many tube stops close to both UCL and the President Hotel. The closest tube station to the lecture theatre is Euston Square. The closest stop to the hotel is Russell Square. If you are going to make several journeys on the tube and/or London buses, you should consider buying an Oyster card. It's almost always cheaper and more convenient. Please be aware that there will be several other function theory/Nevanlinna theory meetings in London over the next couple of years, so I hope you'll have many opportunities to use your Oyster card again!

London's transport system is being upgraded for the 2012 Olympics. Some lines are closed for engineering work on weekends. Ask a member of staff if this happens. Planned engineering work and other line closures will be announced at the Transport for London website.

Arrival by air

London is served by a large number of airports.

Heathrow Airport

There is only one underground line at Heathrow - the westbound
  Piccadilly
service. Take this train to Russell Square. There's not much point taking the more expensive Heathrow Express as you'll have the extra hassle of changing trains.

Gatwick Airport

Take the to Victoria Station and follow the directions for the tube below.

Luton Airport

Take the free shuttle bus to Luton Airport Parkway and then take a train to London St Pancras (see below).

Stansted Airport

Take the to Liverpool Street Station and follow the directions for the tube below.

Arrival by train

The pricing structure for trains in the UK is difficult to follow. When buying your ticket at the station, it's usually cheaper to buy a return (i.e. roundtrip) ticket than two single tickets - especially if both journeys are on the same day. Ask when you buy your ticket - make sure you say when you're coming back.

Euston Station, Kings Cross Station and St Pancras International are all walking distance from the venue.

St Pancras International (Eurostar) and Kings Cross Station

The Eurostar is the best way to reach London from Belgium and most of France (Paris in particular). UCL and the President Hotel are about 15 and 20 minutes away by foot respectively. If you don't want to walk, follow the signs to the Underground. For the hotel, take the
  Piccadilly
line from Kings Cross Underground Station one stop to Russell Square. For UCL, take the
  Circle
  Hammersmith & City
or
  Metropolitan
line one stop to Euston Square.

Euston Station

The conference venue is a couple of minutes walk a way. The hotel is about 12 minutes away.

Liverpool Street and Farringdon Stations

Take the westbound
  Circle
  Hammersmith & City
or
  Metropolitan
line. For UCL, get out at Euston Square. For the hotel, change to the
  Piccadilly
line at Kings Cross/St Pancras for one stop and get out at Russell Square.

Paddington Station

Take the eastbound
  Circle
or
  Hammersmith & City
line. For UCL, get out at Euston Square. For the hotel, change to the
  Piccadilly
line at Kings Cross/St Pancras (see above).

Victoria Station

  Victoria
line. For UCL, get out at Euston Station. For the hotel, change to the
  Piccadilly
line at Green Park and continue to Russell Square.
