INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF ORAL MEDICINE

The Congress Centre in Montreal Canada at the end of May, was the location for a joint meeting of the American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM) and the European Association for Oral Medicine (EAOM), together with representatives from a number of other countries. The session on common oral mucosal disorders was chaired by Professor Crispian Scully CBE (Eastman, London; left of picture), and included, from left to right, Prof Drore Eisen (Cincinatti, USA), Prof Francina Lozada-Nur (San Francisco, USA), Prof Meir Gorsky (Tel Aviv, Israel) and Prof Jose-Vicente Bagan (Valencia, Spain). The International Federation of Oral Medicine was established, involving societies from USA, Canada, Europe, the West Indies, the Antipodes, and Japan, and subsequently societies in Korea and Thailand.

 The 2nd International Congress was held under Professor Isacc van der Waal, in Amsterdam in 2009.

The 3rd International Congress was held under Professor Crispian Scully, in London in 2010 as part of Oral healthcare for patients living with cancer.

Following discussions during 1997-98, a meeting with the purpose of discussing a possible federation was called by Professor Crispian Scully, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, October 1st 1998, between representatives of the

General Objectives

The Organisers agreed the following general objectives: to

  1. promote collaboration, education and research in oral medicine
  2. promote continuing education in oral medicine in the dental profession
  3. promote the interest of research in oral medicine at other institutions, professional associations and industries
  4. inform governments and other official institutions of the significance of oral medicine for oral health and prevention of oral diseases
  5. promote the exchange of scientific information through congresses, other meetings and workshops.

Conclusions

  1. It was agreed that an International Federation of Oral Medicine be established with the goals of international communication and education.
  2. It was agreed that the Organising Committee should attempt to meet next, preferably with representatives from Australian, Israeli, Ibero-American and other regional societies of oral medicine, at the AAOM meeting April 2000 in Las Vegas. Subsequently Dr B Blasberg approached Crispian Scully for membership of the new Canadian Association, which was agreed.
  3. It was agreed that an International Congress on Oral Medicine should be arranged for 2001 in north America, preferably Montreal or Quebec.
  4. It was agreed to communicate with Dean Millard and David Mason in order to look towards a collaboration for possibly 2003 and a world workshop in collaboration with the earlier initiatives from those two representatives of the Universities of Michigan and Glasgow.
  5. It was agreed that Crispian Scully would act as Chairman and suggest a logo for IFOM.
  6. It was agreed to use the internet bulletin board organised by David Sirois and Crispian Scully for communications where possible.
