‘Oral Healthcare in People Living with Cancer’ was held in London on 11 June 2010, supported by RCSEd and UCL. The single day CPD meeting, in parallel sessions, was organised by Professor Crispian Scully CBE, and given by a European faculty, and supported by the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO) http://www.homepages.ucl.ac.uk/~sfhvcms/iaoo/index.html ], and the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) [http://www.mascc.org/mc/page.do;jsessionid=27FF70316F8B947314C17F98E86CFD17.mc0?sitePageId=86907].

The day was aimed at dentists and specialists, mainly in maxillofacial surgery, oral medicine, oral surgery, special care dentistry, and otorhinolaryngology, as well as Dental Care Professionals (DCPs), and the cancer support team. The Faculty included European leaders in the field.

Supporters included Philips Oral Healthcare, Elsevier Publishers, Healthcare Learning Company and HCA.
The peer-reviewed papers from the meeting are published in the June issue of Oral Oncology [http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/105/description#description], the official journal of the European Association of Oral Medicine, the International Association of Oral Pathologists, and the IAOO.

Nearly 300 delegates from 33 countries attended, the considerable success being reflected in the initial comments including:

The Second World Congress of the IAOO

Oral Cancer: Imagine the Future. July 8-11, 2009

The second world congress was held at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto, Canada.

More than 710 Head and Neck Surgeons, Maxillofacial Surgeons, Otolaryngologists, Oncologists, Oral Pathologistsand others in the head and neck cancer team congregated from around the world at the Second Congress of the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO), despite the global recession and swine influenza pandemic.

Coordinated by the President, Professor Jatin Shah (New York), and the Program Chairs, Alexander Rapidis (Athens and Eastman), Pat Gullane (Toronto) and Crispian Scully (Eastman). This Congress was a huge success.

The Congress covered a multitude of topics representing subspecialist interests in the major sub-divisions of the field. The scientific program included keynote addresses, panel discussions, debates, instructional courses, oral papers and posters. The program was supported by a commercial exhibition, delegate receptions and a Gala Dinner at the Rogers Tower.

The International Academy Of Oral Oncology (IAOO) symposium was held at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto, Canada, July 11, 2009, in association with MASCC (Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer).

 

Oral Cancer - Challenges and Solutions

The officers and the governing council of the International Academy of Oral Oncology, were delighted to welcome delegates from 29 countries and all continents to London in October 2007 for the first Continuing Professional Development day of the Academy entitled Oral Cancer - Challenges and Solutions.

During the course of the past years, the academy has made significant strides with membership growing literally every week, drawing specialists from all parts of the world interested in the field of oral cancer. The education, training and research committees of the academy are working feverishly to accomplish their tasks at hand.

The conference chairmen, Professor Alexander Rapidis and Professor Crispian Scully, assisted by an outstanding scientific program committee, put together an educational, informative, and interesting progamme including keynote addresses by world experts, panel discussions, debates on controversial issues and proffered papers selected from submitted abstracts.

London proved an excellent venue for this memorable event which attracted a full house of delegates. We look forward to equally stimulating debate among professionals in the field of oral cancer in the coming years.
