Patrick J. GULLANE, MD, FRCSC, FACS

A native of Galway Ireland, Dr Patrick Gullane received his MB, Degree from Galway University, Ireland in 1970. He completed his Residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, University of Western Ontario in 1975. Following that he embarked on a surgical career and obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons Canada (FRCSC) in 1975 and Certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 1976. Dr. Gullane then pursued advanced training in Head and Neck Oncology with Dr. Sebastian Arena at the Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, with Dr John Conley, Presbyterian Medical Center, New York and with Dr John Marquis Converse New York University Medical Center Institute of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1975-1977

Since completion of his training he has held numerous Academic positions including: Assistant Professor, Department of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery, University of Western Ontario 1978-83. In 1983 he was recruited to the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Toronto.

Dr Gullane is recognized as a leader in the field of Head and Neck Surgery. Over the years he has received numerous awards including the Honour Award of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and the Honour Award of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. In 1990 he received the “The Harris P. Mosher Award” for his Thesis submission from the Triolgoical Society and was awarded the “Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation” in 1992. From 1992-to present he has been selected as a member of the “Best Doctors in America”. Other recognitions include the Distinguished Service Award, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2003 and the Millennium Society Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery in 2004

He presently serves as President of the American Head and Neck Society and President of the North American Skull Base Society. More recently he was elected as Vice-President, Eastern Section – Triological Society.

Dr Gullane is a member of numerous Medical Societies, both national and internationally and he has been invited as a Visiting Professor to over 30 Countries lecturing on all aspects of Head and Neck Oncology. He has delivered over 400 presentations Nationally and Internationally.

Dr Gullane has been the collaborator of numerous (7ongoing) research grants receiving funding from various Agencies, including NCIC and NIH. In addition he has facilitated the establishment of 4 University Chairs in Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstruction from private funding donation in excess of $10.5 M. He has published 195 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 53 chapters in textbooks and has had 8 books published on various aspects of head and neck surgery. He serves on the Editorial Board of 10 Journals.
