The International Academy of Oral Medicine [IAOM], established 2005, draws together for the first time formally, clinicians and scientists worldwide, working on issues relating to the aetiopathogenesis, epidemiology, prevention and management of oral diseases and of oral health in patients with systemic disease. IAOM consists of a wide range of clinicians and scientists worldwide, leaders in their fields, who have united to establish the Academy.

The Academy draws its authority from its Founding Fellowship of clinicians and scientists of repute worldwide, leaders in their fields, who have united to establish the only independent international body representing the interests of the whole spectrum of sciences related to oral medicine.

Fellowship of the Academy is open to all with an interest in the field, subject to certain conditions detailed in the constitution.

Mission and Goals

The mission of the Academy is to stimulate the advancement of oral medicine by bringing together a select group of innovative individuals of diverse specialty qualifications who share a common interest in the biology and pathology of diseases that affect the mouth and its contiguous structures. The Academy is especially committed to providing mentorship and opportunities for young scientists and clinicians to stimulate new thinking, ideas and approaches to the study and treatment of oral diseases.

History

The concept of an international academy to draw together clinicians and scientists working in the field of oral medicine, so that advances in medical science can be made and translated speedily into benefits for patients, arose from the interactions between Isaac van der Waal and Crispian Scully. Discussions with their mutual colleague Bruce Baum, a senior editor of the journal Oral Diseases and a leading research clinician from USA confirmed that there was a real need for such a formal group.

Therefore leading clinicians in the field from Asia (Takashi Fujibayashi and Kobkan Thongprasom), Europe (Jose Bagan, Giovanni Lodi and Peter Reichart), Latin America (Oslei paes de Almeida) and USA (Jim Sciubba and Steve Sonis), were approached to form a steering committee.

This committee were requested to nominate a number of active colleagues in the field from around the world, mostly clinicians or scientists recently publishing in the field as identified by MEDLINE, as Founding Fellows, to establish the International Academy of Oral Medicine.
