JD Wetherspoon Pubs
Introduction
Welcome to my informal list of JD Wetherspoon pubs around the country. It was
started at a time when information about new pubs was not very forthcoming,
and difficult to find, and a lack of any full list available. Fortunately,
it has got a lot better the last couple of years what with the introduction
of a yearly directory, websites for JD Wetherspoon and for Lloyds No. 1, and
much input through the Yahoo! JD Wetherspoon email list. Note that I have no
connections with JD Wetherspoon, not even shares, I am just a happy
customer!
The list is divided into three areas: pubs currently open,
pubs that are listed or rumoured as about to open, and those now no longer
owned by JD Wetherspoon.
All comments, updates and corrections welcome.

Sources
JD Wetherspoon produce two publications containing information about their
pubs, and forthcoming openings. The first is a glossy magazine produced
about four to five times a year and this includes a page or two about new
openings since the last edition, along with those about to open before the
next edition, and general PR articles about sites acquired. The second is a
handy size booklet listing all their pubs along with full details and
location maps, and this is produced about once a year.
There are a couple of websites run by JD Wetherspoon:
http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/ provides information about the
JD Wetherspoon pubs.
The pub locator there has been much improved over the years and is now very
useful. It lists all the details about the pubs including the history of
the name and opening date as well as the usual address details.
http://www.jdwetherspoonlodges.co.uk/ provides details about the
Wetherlodges, including online booking. The previous website for Lloyds No.
1 Bars just redirects you to the main JD Wetherspoon website.
An email list has been started at Yahoo! groups for enthusiasts of
JD Wetherspoon pubs, and has been quite useful in confirming new openings,
locations of pubs, and suggested pub crawls along with transport
information. Please join up and join in. You can find the email list by
going to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wetherspoons/ and joining up
with your Yahoo! profile.
Finally, thanks to those that have personally provided information and
updates to the list. It is good to see that this list has been found useful
by others!
Good Beer Guide and Cask Marque
The Good Beer Guide is compiled by members of the Campaign for Real Ale
(CAMRA) and published annually.
Entry is solely on the regular availability of good beer and pubs cannot
(in theory!) buy their way into the guide. Members survey pubs for their
local branches which then select the best for the guide.
In the 2012 edition of the Good Beer Guide, CAMRA members have decided
that 239 (unconfirmed) of the chains 825 plus pubs (238 in 2011, 193 in 2010,
173 in 2009, 129 in 2008, 123 in 2007, 113 in 2006) sell beer good enough
to be included. These are indicated in the main list with GBG 2012
after the entry. After at least six years, Northern Ireland loses its 100%
rate of entries with Coleraine not being included in 2012.
Cask Marque (Cask Marque) is an
industry sponsored scheme to promote good quality beer at point of sale.
Breweries and pub owning companies pay an annual fee for each pub included
and the quality of the beer is checked a couple of times a year by Cask
Marque inspectors. JD Wetherspoon is one such company involved with Cask
Marque and aims to have all of its pubs that sell real ale
(some airport bars don't) in the scheme.
Open Pubs
This section lists those JD Wetherspoon pubs that are currently open. It
lists them by county order (sorry, no complaints please about the county
names, they are the ones I know!) The numbers after the county name are
the total number in that county. Some of the location names may be a bit
strange, but I think they reflect the location better than that given by
JD Wetherspoon, often a case of local knowledge helps a lot when trying to
find them.
Lloyds No. 1 Bars: These operate in a similar way to ordinary
JD Wetherspoon pubs, but usually have music at varying levels during the day,
often have later opening hours, and varying policies on what real ales are
available, if at all!
As time has gone on, there has been a lot of blurring between whether a
pub is a Lloyds No. 1 Bar or not. Some of the JD Wetherspoon have music in the
evening, but don't trade as a Lloyds No. 1 Bar, and some of the Lloyds No.
1 Bars don't have any signs outside saying so, just JD Wetherspoon on the
signs. Best to take the JD Wetherspoon Pub Finder as the most definitive list
of Lloyds No. 1 Bars, but don't be surprised with what you find when you
get there!
Wetherlodges: These are indicated by the (WL) after the pub name.
A useful source of cheap accommodation if there is one in the area. Based
along the Travelodge ethos, you pay per room, rather than by person.
Breakfast is extra and can be purchased from the JD Wetherspoon breakfast
menu in the pub. Look out for two nights for the price of one offers at
weekends, often advertised in JD Wetherspoon News, or just phone up and
ask. As of August 2009, Wetherlodges are now known as Wetherspoon Hotels,
presumably to get away from the cheap Travelodge image.
Totals
Number of JD Wetherspoon pubs visited = 831 out of
853 open pubs and 100 out of 103 ex-JD Wetherspoon
pubs making a total of 931 out of 956 pubs.

Forthcoming Pubs
This section lists those pubs that are about to open. Sources generally
include the JD Wetherspoon newsletter and website, but often local
information is gained from CAMRA newsletters. An opening date is
given if specified in the Newsletter or website, but this is often a
rough guess, and pubs sometimes open months (or years!) after these
dates. If you intend going to one, then please check ahead to see if it
has opened yet!
Those that have opened and have been verified on the JD Wetherspoon
mailing list will be noted as such, and when they finally appear in the
JD Wetherspoon newsletter as open, along with full details, then they will be
moved to the main section. Those that I have been to before they appear in
the newsletter will be moved to the main section, they are very obviously
open!
Information and rumours of new sites are welcome to augment the list, but
more often than not these days, a lot of ear marked sites are delayed or
sold on to other pub companies as JD Wetherspoon open less new pubs per year.

Former JD Wetherspoon pubs
This section lists those pubs that used to be JD Wetherspoon pubs, but have
since been sold on. The majority of them are still trading as pubs, but
for those that are not, current usage is noted after the pub details. There
is a suprisingly large number of ex-Wetherspoon pubs. They have mostly
been sold off in blocks over the years but some were sold singly for various
reasons. Updates welcome for any changes to their current usage.
Those in ordinary text are those that I have been to as JD Wetherspoon pubs.
Those in italics and with the location underlined are those that I have
visited since they were sold by JD Wetherspoon. Those in just italics are
those that I have not been to.
Many thanks to those that have added and researched the information below.
Appeal for Information: Bodmin. I have received a couple of emails
stating that there used to be a JD Wetherspoon pub in Bodmin, Cornwall. It
was called the Cornish Soldier, and was located near to the Victoria
Barracks. It is now a nightclub called Eclipse. Has anyone got any concrete
information about the pub as I don't have any recollection of it ever
appearing on any of JD Wetherspoon pub lists. Thanks! John, Feb 2006.
Update: I visited the site in May 2010 and it is highly unlikely it was
ever a JD Wetherspoon pub. It is about half a mile out of town beyond the
station and is in a very unlikely location for such a pub. It is generally
thought that Bury St Edmunds was the first pub out of London.
Total number of former JD Wetherspoon pubs = 103.
Number of the above I have been to as JD Wetherspoon pubs = 83.
Number of the above I have been to since sold by JD Wetherspoon = 17.
Number of the above I have not been to = 3.
