Book Description
With the growl of the Marine sergeant he was, Senator Zell Miller leaves no doubt that he believes his own Democratic Party is badly out of step with most of the country and needs to shape up or ship out.

As part of a stinging critique of the Democratic Party, Miller outlines key positions on important issues that can again make the party relevant for the entire nation. From tax cuts to welfare, gun control to the environment, the arts to education, immigration to terrorism, Miller identifies values that make sense to a growing majority of Americans.

Miller’s candid analysis of the campaigns of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton further underscores his conclusion that the Democratic Party can no longer field a serious presidential challenge.

Many party loyalists will not like what Senator Miller writes; yet his credentials are beyond question, for few Democrats have worked longer or stronger for the party and its candidates. Zell Miller has served in an elective office in each of the last six decades. When he left office as governor after two terms, he had an 85 percent approval rating, prompting the Washington Post to call him the most popular governor in the country. After getting to Washington, he became President Bush’s biggest Democratic supporter, but steadfastly refused to switch parties.

A National Party No More is a firsthand account from the enigmatic senator who has confounded his Democratic colleagues. Driven by conscience and common sense, Senator Miller names the self-destructive direction of his party and stubbornly pulls the Democratic family toward reform.

About the Author
Zell Miller began his career in public service in 1959 with a term as mayor of Young Harris, Georgia. In 1960, he was elected to the Georgia Senate at the age of 28. In 1974, he won the first of four consecutive terms as Georgia’s lieutenant governor. Then in 1990, Miller ran for governor and won the first of two terms he would serve as the state’s top leader.

Miller’s HOPE Scholarship program was dubbed by the Los Angeles Times as "the most far-reaching scholarship program in the nation.’’ His pre-kindergarten program won an award for innovation from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

After leaving the governor’s office in 1999, Miller taught at Emory University and at his alma maters, the University of Georgia and Young Harris College. Five books have been written by Miller, including "Corps Values: Everything You Need To Know I Learned in the Marines." He also served on several corporate boards before joining the Senate, where he now serves.

Well done, Zell, November 3, 2003
By S. Bridges (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The shrill criticisms of this book speak volumes about how very credible is Zell Miller's analysis. Yes, Zell is a conservative Democrat. This is a result, not in spite of, his Southern heritage. The country should mourn his political passing and hope that men of such high character will succeed him in all levels of political office.

In this book, Zell is arguing against the vapid blather that is dominating the current Democratic political discourse. A result of which is Liberal politics' transformation into a game of gotcha rather than representative government. The Democrats are heading toward a major stand-off with the American people, and may meet the Whig's in the trash heap of history.

Zell's leadership, heart, and compassion will be sorely missed here in the heart of Dixie. Unfortunately for the party, the Democrat's will not miss him but instead hasten his departure.

Old School Democrat, February 5, 2004
By R. Anderson (Petoskey, MI USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It's easy to pick out the democrat reviews of this book. They're the one's that claim Senator Miller isn't a dem. anymore, or never was.
The fact of matter is, he's the kind of democrat they should strive to be. I was a democrat, but I was cured by Jimmy Carter and subsequent dems of that.
Sen. Miller is a man of conscience and knows his party has left him behind.
Both parties have problems, but the dems are the one's who have tried to turn our counrty in a feel good place where no one says anything negative to anyone at anytime, and where the government runs everything. And oh by the way shut up and send us your taxes because we know better then you how to spend it.
After reading this book I realize my own defection was the right thingk to do. Sen Miller won't though for his own personal reasons.
This book is for the democrats who still think for themselves, and don't have a knee jerk reaction to critiicism.
Democrats!!!-----Get rid of Michael Moore and embrace Sen Zell Miller.

I love Zell Miller, but..., February 13, 2004
By Coug Moog "s_gil" (Charleston, WV USA) - See all my reviews
unlike the majority of reviewers here, I actually read the book.

It's a benign read by a very nice man. And to all those reviewers who call Miller a "Republican," remember that Kennedy fought Communism and cut taxes by historic amounts (to the everlasting shame of his overflowing brother Teddy). JFK would be booted right out of today's Democratic party as the 'Republican' he was.

Which tells you just how far off the deep end the Dems have jumped.

Back to Zell. He tells his life story in this book, sort of establishing his Democratic Pary bona fides. Isn't it funny that at one time Democrats were allowed to be pro-life? Al Gore, Richard Gephardt, Bill Clinton, so many have had to abandon their conscience just to stay in their party's good graces when the abortion lobby took over.

Miller never did. He's stayed true to his principles and finds himself almost always being dragged leftward with his party. So he's leaving politics. I think if he'd stayed governor of Georgia, he'd have a taste for it still. But to be thrown in amongst the radicals in Washington has got to be a bit of a shock for a good ol' boy.

The book does not flow, though. I found myself frequently somewhere on the page, wondering how I'd gotten there and not remembering a word of what I'd just read. There are portions of this book that are memorable, that make you feel this is a good man with a sharp sense of what he believes and wants.

He should have put his book through 4 or 5 more rewrites with an editor who was truly his friend. He could have sharpened and refined his message and used the autobiographical nature of the narrative to build and strengthen his case. Instead we get a collection of chapters that look as though each was written as a column and then all were collected and bound together: the Collected Works of Zell Miller.

That said, I'm glad I read Miller's book. It makes me wish he had put his money where his mouth is and switched parties temporarily the day Jumpin' Jim Jeffords pulled the ol' bait and switch on the voters of New Hampshire and shifted control of the Senate to the 'selected, not elected' Democrats. Just so fairness could rule. He laments the unscrupulousness of his Democratic colleagues, but when he had the power to put a stop to it, he was MIA. Must be a Democrat after all, no matter how conservative.
