Michael Savage is the host of The Savage Nation, a radio program that airs on over 300 stations nationwide. A self-described victim of "truth-in-mouth syndrome," he claims to be "the only man in the country saying it the way it really is." His stated purpose for writing the book is to save a "homosexualized, feminized America" from a liberal assault that is "unraveling the very fabric of this great nation." Declaring that "a minority of feminist zealots rule the culture," he blames Democrats and liberals for everything from a general decline in morals in the United States to bringing the Taliban to power in Afghanistan. Although one chapter is entitled "Crimes of the Democrats" (with special attention paid to Al Gore), Savage is no Republican stooge--this "bipartisan basher" reserves plenty of venom for the GOP as well, particularly regarding immigration, one of his favorite subjects. Savage calls for a severe tightening of U.S. borders and vigilant racial profiling in order to combat terrorism and the spread of infectious diseases. He also rails against liberal media bias, big government, the lack of prayer in schools, rampant pornography, the UN, the ACLU, and a host of social ills that he believes were caused almost exclusively by hippies in the 1960s and the Clinton administration in the 1990s.

Like many talk-show personalities, Savage is confrontational, angry, entertaining, and prone to exaggeration, sometimes all at once. He can also be funny and sarcastic. But while he does offer some interesting observations and enough food for thought to make this slim volume worth a read, his book is essentially one long rant with precious little useful information to back up his often bombastic claims. His angry-man shtick may make for stimulating drive-time listening (and high ratings), but it doesn't make for a particularly convincing book. --Shawn Carkonen --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description
So writes Michael Savage, radio personality and crusader, against what he sees as the pervasive evils of liberalism. In this raucous and unapologetic manifesto, Savage illustrates how years of liberal brainwashing-from the media, politicians, and left-wing pundits-have changed the direction of America, for the very worst.

Each week almost eight million radio listeners across the nation tune in to "The Michael Savage Show." His fearless and passionate assault on liberal thought and politics has many calling him the Paul Revere of our time, addressing everything from illegal immigrants to PETA, from the "Hollywood idiots" to that "international government" that is the United Nations.

In his trademark in-your-face style, Savage reinforces patriotism, family, and American values, laying out a plan to once again reclaim our country's identity.

Thought provoking, March 31, 2003
By Keith Watt (Phoenix, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Savage Nation: Saving America from the Liberal Assault on Our Borders, Language and Culture (Hardcover)
I've not heard Dr. Savage on radio, but picked up the book because it looked intriguing, and on that point it didn't disappoint.

The author describes himself as an "Independent Conservative". Some would categorize the tone of this work as right wing extremism. However, if you can get past the inflammatory tone, the author brings up some interesting observations. His theme is essentially that we (the American "sheeple") have all been brainwashed by the liberal media, such as CNN (described as "Crescent News Network"), the NY Times, etc. According to Dr. Savage, this brainwashing is resulting in a decline in traditional American values. OK, after years of talk radio, (Savage, Limbaugh, and others) we have heard this before. Having said that, however his self admitted bias colors the tone of his points, he does ask some pertinent sociological and political questions:

Have we gone overboard with political correctness to the point where racial profiling restrictions make terrorists attacks more likely or easier to accomplish? Have we as a nation put security at risk with attempting to "understand our enemies"?

Have we ignored the spirit (and letter) of the constitution with things such as banning school prayer?

Do we discriminate against the best and brightest in the name of embracing diversity (the second chapter entitled "Diversity is Perversity")?

Of course, these questions have as many answers as the number of people (excuse me, "sheeple") who choose to read the book, based on the reader's own sociological and political leanings. The value of the points in the book is that the author brings up topics that are normally not considered or discussed. He provides a diametrically opposed view to groups such as the ACLU and PETA, who at times promulgate ideas just as far from center as Dr. Savages, yet we as a society may be less likely to dismiss these as the ranting of a radical extremist.

Three stars, if for no other reason than the author is up front about being in the collective faces of his readers (and I'm assuming his radio audience) and thought provoking, although some thoughts are better "thought out" than others. Yet the ideas will be lost on many who are left or centrist leaning in their views due to the tone of the delivery. Of course, devoted fans or Dr. Savage and Mr. Limbaugh will cheer loudly.

If you're not here, you're nowhere, March 27, 2003

This review is from: The Savage Nation: Saving America from the Liberal Assault on Our Borders, Language and Culture (Hardcover)
I have to admit I was a little doubtful coming into this one. I thoroughly enjoy Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter and was expecting something along those lines. From page 1 of The Savage Nation, I had a smile on my face that would not go away - mixed in with intermittent laughter and "did he just say that?" remarks. Savage shocks the liberal and politically correct reader into a veritable apoplexy with his unabashedness, candor, and frankness. This was a long time coming, Mike. I can't wait for your next work. Read this book TODAY!. It will not disappoint.

Incoherent fact-free rant, April 15, 2006
By Nicholas R. Hunter (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Savage Nation: Saving America from the Liberal Assault on Our Borders, Language and Culture (Hardcover)
Michael Savage is obviously a very angry man. Some of the things that make him angry are Kwanzaa ("one more gimmick to stir up racial hatred in this country"), the "wrong kind" of immigrants, perverts, the people of "Turd World" countries (many of whom wear "dirty night shirts", apparently). He thinks it's Hillary Clinton's fault that young boys are prescribed Ritalin for displaying "symptoms of masculinity."

It is difficult to imagine that the author can maintain in normal life the intensity of indignation he manifests in this book and presumably in his radio broadcasts without suffering serious medical consequences. To some degree, it has to be an act. As such, it seems to be a cynical way to make a living: praying on and inflaming his audience's insecurities in order to deliver them to his sponsors.

As I get older, I find anger to be a less and less attractive option. You don't feel good when you're angry, the consequences of the things you do while you're angry rarely turn out to be good. That's probably why most spiritual teachers advise against it. If this point of view is enough to define me as a liberal, so be it. I prefer to think things through and listen to opposing points of view. That's why I picked up this book in the first place. Unfortunately, there's not much here of any substance of interest to anyone but those true believers who prefer their invective unleavened with facts, and perhaps a clinical psychology student or two looking for a subject for their theses.

For some odd reason, the author reminds me of the character Dan Preston in Wayne's World 2.

Del Preston: Alright, ladies and gentlemen. It takes two people to run a concert: one back stage, and one out front. One man alone cannot do this. Wayne, you will run the backstage team. Milton, you are my liaison between Wayne's backstage team and Garth's front-stage team which includes myself in the booth. To the left and right of the stage are machine-gun pillboxes, M-60 Browning. Now these babies tend to heat up so shoot in 3 second bursts. In the event of capture I will personally distribute these cyanide capsules to be placed under the tongue like so.

[Places a capsule in his mouth]

Del Preston: Any questions?

Garth: Yes, I have a question. When did you turn into a nutbar?
