Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
They may not get thrown to the lions any more, but today's Christians endure subtler forms of martyrdom, argues this strident manifesto. Limbaugh (Absolute Power: The Legacy of Corruption in the Clinton-Reno Justice Department) recites a litany of abuses and insults perpetrated, he claims, by separation-of-church-and-state absolutists and the forces of secular humanism. Most of them are familiar complaints of the Christian Right: school children are forbidden to pray before football games; nativity scenes are banned from municipal property; the media ridicule Christian politicians, and Hollywood caricatures Christians as Bible-thumping yahoos or axe-wielding fanatics. At universities where Darwinism, relativism and "sexuality studies" hold sway, Limbaugh says, vocal Christians get packed off to the psych ward. Most insidiously, Christians are continually subjected to sensitivity training-which often promotes a "homosexual agenda"-and silenced when they object. Many of the cases Limbaugh cites raise legitimate questions about society's hypersensitivity to religious expression (although the really serious abuses were often remedied after the inevitable lawsuit). Unfortunately, he tends to equate political controversy with religious bigotry, and Christianity with fundamentalism. Many of the issues he cites, like Democratic opposition to pro-life judicial nominees, or laws requiring Catholic employers to cover contraceptives in health insurance, amount to political disputes pitting conservatives like Limbaugh against liberals, feminists, gays or users of contraceptives, with Christians ranged on both sides. Limbaugh has a point: there are anti-Christian tendencies-rigid school bureaucrats, militant atheists and an often profane and irreligious popular culture-in American society. But there are plenty of pro-Christian tendencies too, such that Limbaugh's persecution complex seems overblown.

From AudioFile
The point of view is that persecution of Christians in the media and public life is not recognized with the same consistency it is when other groups--such as minorities and gays--are similarly persecuted or criticized. The articulate author says that attacks on Christian expression, often framed as a concern about separation of church and state, have gone too far in removing God from our educational institutions. Since many kinds of controversial expression are being suppressed these days, the essay is a welcome effort to open up the marketplace of ideas we call public discourse. Though provocative and even captivating, the arguments still fall short of the sound and nuanced discussion this topic deserves. The audio also would have been helped by a professional speaker. Religious Warfare in the USA, July 14, 2004
By Bryan Carey "Bryan Carey" (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Persecution: How Liberals are Waging War Against Christians (Hardcover)
David Limbaugh, younger brother of Rush Limbaugh, is a conservative columnist and occasional author who has written a few books about conservative thought and practice. In this book, Limbaugh presents some arguments explaining why he feels that the liberal establishment is waging war against Christians and Christianity.

Limbaugh composed this book as part history lesson and part modern- day political guide. He talks about the educational system in the United States, pointing out that the Bible was once the center of schooling for all youngsters. Today, teachers are forbidden from leading students in prayer or from promoting Biblical passages in the classroom. Public displays of religious symbols on government property were once the
norm. Today, they have been ruled unconstitutional by the "liberal" judicial system. He talks about speech codes, political correctness, and other changes that he feels have been made for the worst in the past fifty or so years.

I can agree with some of the complaints that Limbaugh has with the American system. It is true that, in many cases, political correctness has gone way too far. It is also true that Christians as a group are often singled out for harassment. I don't agree that they are being "persecuted", because there hasn't been any bloodshed or physical pain endured. But it is true that Christians as a whole have been targeted for personal attacks.

One problem I have with this book is its explanations regarding America's foundation and constitutional laws. Limbaugh correctly points out that most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and most of the population in general back in the late 1700's was Christian. But he seems to think that merely "being" Christian means that the constitution and the basis of law are also religious in nature. I can agree that these men were, mostly, men who believed in a higher power. But that doesn't mean that they wanted the U.S. government to be founded on religion. If they wanted this, they would have explicitly added it to the constitution.

Limbaugh writes this book in a respectful way, and he avoids the tendency for authors like himself to resort to immaturity by calling their opponents names and belittling them at every turn. There is no doubt which side of the road Limbaugh is coming from. But he sticks with his arguments and avoids the temptation to hurl insults at those he disagrees with.

This is the type of book that some will love and others will hate. I have many issues with Limbaugh's ideas and his questionable logic. But I can also agree with him on some points, like the silliness of political correctness and the targeting of Christians for harassment. It is true that they are being targeted, but not necessarily because of religion, per se. I think Christians are attacked simply because they are in the majority, making them an easy target.

If you like some good, intellectual debate to get yourself thinking, then you might enjoy "Persecution". Like me, you may not agree with everything Limbaugh has to say, but his writing is still pretty good and he does avoid name calling and other acts of immaturity. I recommend taking a look at this book to see what you think.

The title is overstated, but the evidence is solid., December 27, 2003
By Michael Erisman (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Persecution: How Liberals are Waging War Against Christians (Hardcover)
First, I want to agree with some other reviews here that the author's use of the word "persecution" to describe the current liberal attitude towards all things Christian is way too strong. They are indeed waging war on Christianity as outlined here, and what it stands for from an ideological sense, but not yet on Christians as people. Also, it is unfortunate that some of the terminology within the book makes this a "political" debate, although it is a moral debate, and by aligning it with political parties it dilutes the reality of what this movement means.

The arguments and the undisputed evidence about the specific treatment of Christianity is absolutely bullet proof. For those who may disagree or dismiss the evidence based on the source, please read a book which corroborates the information in this book, "The Death of Right and Wrong" by Tammy Bruce. Tammy, from a liberal perspective comes to the exact same conclusions, albeit less politely, that Limbaugh does in this book. The section on the public education system is hardly a newsflash, and is a bit dry at times. One always laughs out loud and wonders how many of these "educated" people fail to see the blatant self refuting nature of policies that demand "you must be tolerant". These types of policies are outlined in this book in full detail.

It is in the second section that he makes his best points in my opinion. For example, Annie Laurie Gaylor of Madison was part of a legal group trying to ensure that Mother Theresa was not depicted on public transportation bus passes (page 153). Apparently, Ms. Gaylor feels that Mother Theresa, who spent her whole life giving selflessly to the poor and oppressed, is not in line with Ms. Gaylor's view of feminism and is somehow offensive. But Ms. Gaylor, as astounding and abhorrent as her views are, is pretty typical of the liberal worldview which practices intolerance to an extreme seldom seen before. The book has countless examples.

A few other gems are the actions of Miami-Dade County officials who disallowed all religious presentations on public grounds, except for all of those which are non-Christian in nature (page 160). A New Jersey public school bans "A Christmas Carol", Covington, Georgia is sued for labeling December 25th as Christmas on their calendar, and so it goes in case after case. What these situations represent is not so much "persecution" but simply illogical hypocrisy.

This is a good book, and one that presents evidence that is supported by those within the Liberal left itself. I do disagree however with the author on whether this "persecution" is a bad thing. Christianity is not the symbols used to represent it, but a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and that is not open to attack. He demonstrates that atheists and liberals who are intent on destroying Christianity have made a fatal flaw of logic; they are awakening a sleeping giant. See the reaction of the people from Franklinton, Louisiana, to an absurd ACLU suit in their town. (Page 178) Limbaugh demonstrates that liberals use a marketing scheme of tolerance and equality to push an intolerant and unequal agenda, and that they are continually violating the principles they supposedly stand on. In addition, the book demonstrates time and again that tactics used by liberals to silence Christianity are in serious danger of violating basic free-speech rights of US citizens. This is very disturbing. Overall, a great book and some great insights, even if perhaps overstated a bit.

Important reading for those interested in American liberties, February 21, 2004
By David C. Leaumont "Dave" (Bossier City, LA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Persecution: How Liberals are Waging War Against Christians (Hardcover)
Limbaugh's book was easily readable and well documented. He gives example after example of discrimination directed specifically towards Christians. As a matter of fact, this book has more examples than it does free prose by Limbaugh. Many, many of these are found at many religiously conscious web sites. He points out the hypocrisies of the neo-tolerant crowds, again, with documented specifics. For instance, he talks of many occurrences where groups allowed one set of ideals and pursuits to have freedom, while Christian ideals and pursuits are restricted or outright prohibited. These examples fill the first 10 chapters of his book. Chapter 11 is on the religious nature of our nation's founding and how people today are trying to erase that past and/or pass it off as deism. Chapter 12 is an interview with many noted religious scholars including Marvin Olasky, Ravi Zaccharias and others. I flew through this book because of its ease of reading and Limbaugh's ability to state the case plainly and succinctly. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is worried about the state of affairs today, whether you are a Christian or not. IMO, this book is a must read for all Christians, though. We need to know what's happening and how we can reverse this frightening trend in the US.
